Louisa and Sissy: Fact against fancy in Hard Times. Two female characters in Hard Times, Louisa Gradgrind and Sissy Jupe could be considered contrastive by fate and there is moral fable in this contrast. It is significant that in last two paragraphs of the novel Dickens applies to motherhood as a sense of woman happiness. Daughter of main educator of Coketown, have got only the bitter questionnaire: ââ¬Å"Herself again a wife ââ¬â a mother ââ¬â lovingly watchful of her children, ever careful that they should have a childhood of the mind no less than a childhood of the body, as knowing it to be even a more beautiful thing, and a possession, any hoarded scrap of which, is a blessing and happiness to the wisest? Did Louisa see this? Such a thing was never to be. â⬠(Chapter 9, Final, p. 274) But Sissy, ââ¬Å"Girl number twentyâ⬠(Chapter 1,p. ) in Gradgrind list, was granted with love and motherhood in return for her human virtue: ââ¬Å" But, happy Sissy's happy children loving her; all children loving her; she, grown learned in childish lore; thinking no innocent and pretty fancy ever to be despised; trying hard to know her humbler fellow-creatures, and to beautify their lives of machinery and reality with those imaginative graces and delights,â⬠¦ or fancy dress, or fancy fair; b ut simply as a duty to be done, ââ¬â did Louisa see these things of herself? These things were to be. â⬠(Chapter 9, Final, p. 274) What is the major difference between two of them and why author gives credits to simple-minded Sissy, and left sorrows for educated Louisa? The reader can understand, that Gradgrind was disappointed with Sissy from the very beginning. He didnââ¬â¢t like the fact, that her father works in the circus. Fun and imagination were beyond Gradgrindââ¬â¢s acceptation. Sissy failed with factual definition of the horse in the very beginning of the novel and becomes a loser in his eyes. But his own daughter, Louisa, has to struggle with inner conflict:â⬠fire with nothing to burnâ⬠(Ch. 3) Her imagination was suppressed up to degree of starving under the pressure of that utilitarian educational virtue of ââ¬Å"factâ⬠. Trying to see a circus she and her brother Tom peep though the loophole. Being asked about, she simply answered: ââ¬ËWanted to see what it was likeâ⬠(Ch. 8). Somehow she neglected her fatherââ¬â¢s slogan: â⬠Louisa, never wonder! â⬠(Ch. 8) In the article Charles Dickens, Hard times: for these times Chris Bilton says: ââ¬Å"The only escape from this relentless grind of alculation and rationality is the horse-riding circus, glimpsed tantalisingly by Gradgrindââ¬â¢s children through a hole in the tent. Here is food for the ââ¬Ëidle imaginationââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëfancyââ¬â¢ their father denies themâ⬠Louisa and her brother are deemed to have the best, as their father is a very knowledgeable man and they are ââ¬Å"model childrenâ⬠in ââ¬Å"model houseâ⬠, but ââ¬Å" starved imagination keeping life in itself somehow, which brightened itââ¬â¢s expressionâ⬠. Dickens is depicturing that Louisa knows so many facts, but has not much to imagine. This ââ¬Å" metallurgical Louisaâ⬠used to look out the window at the factory chimneys and observe: ââ¬Å"There seems to be nothing there but languid and monotonous smoke. Yet when the night comes, Fire bursts out. â⬠She can only state a fact about her surroundings. Dickens shows how forced education in a militant style can hurt a developing mind more than help it. Attentive reader can recognize intonation of reproach in her timid speech: ââ¬Å"You have been so careful of me, that I never had a child's dream. You have dealt so wisely with me, father, from my cradle to this hour, that I never had a child's belief or a child's fearâ⬠. But the most dramatic moment happened in the very end of Book The Second, then mental breakdown happened to Louisa and Gradgrind ââ¬Å"laid her down there, and sow the pride of his heart and the triumph of his system, lying, an insensible heap, at his feetâ⬠(p. 204) Sissy Jupe in other hand, also was treated by Gradgrindââ¬â¢s system. But she was a daughter of the circus clown, and spent early childhood in lively atmosphere, surrounded by emotional people, who taught her other things, then facts: In the article ââ¬Å"Taking Dickens to task:Hard Times once moreâ⬠Malkolm Pittok states: â⬠For the circus has as its raison d'etre the development of ââ¬Ëuseless' and ââ¬Ëunproductive'acrobatic skills, the dramatic enactment of highly coloured fictions, and a mode of fanciful, and fancifully advertised, play. In direct contrast to the selfish individualism promoted by Gradgrindism, its members show a generous solidarity and human directness of response. â⬠(p. 116) Gradgrid was trying to influence this foil with his utilitarian approach, but he failed. She depictured as emotional girl from the very beginning: ââ¬Å"Sissy Jupe, Sirâ⬠, explained number twenty, blushingâ⬠¦(Ch 2, p 8) Sissy began living with the Gradgrind family, and indirectly helped them to understand, that something in their life was missed. Love and care were unknown virtues in this family. ââ¬Å"Only Sissy Jupe, the finest flower of the ircus way of life, has influence where it matters and becomes a beacon of effective light and goodness ââ¬â a model for all of us to aspire toâ⬠, says Pittock. Louisa and Sissy have significant dialog in the Book The Third, Chapter 1. Louisa begging for her friendship: ââ¬Å"Forgive me, pity me, help me! Have compassion on my great need, and let me lay this head o f mine upon a loving heart! â⬠(p. 210) So the ââ¬Å"poor girlâ⬠becomes the only ââ¬Å"loving heartâ⬠for Gradgrindââ¬â¢s family. She took care of Mrs. Gradgrind and after he death becomes a mother to younger children of this family. So it is right time to conclude, that fancy wins the fact as far as Sissy granted with female happiness in the very end of Hard Tines and educated Louisa went through mental suffer and appeared childless. To state, that motherhood is the only virtue of female life is not right, but there not too much left for woman, if she never ever experienced the happiness of motherhood. The term juvenile delinquent is best defined as young defender, or a wrongdoer. A person who transgresses moral or civil law. (Audioenglish. net) There are many different theories on the causes of crime and bad behavior. Youth crime is a major issue and receives a great amount of attention from the news media and many politicians today. A juvenile delinquent is one who continuously commits crimes. Usually a juvenile will sometimes commit the same crimes that were done to them to others. An example would be bullying in school. Maybe the juvenile was bullied as well. They also sometimes have mental disorders or behavioral disorders. Students who experience excessive suspension and expulsion are more likely to become part of the school to prison pipeline (Fenning & Rose, 2007). Now being examined is the issue of the school to prison pipeline and trying to understand how students who drop out (or are pushed out) of high school are more likely to enter the prison system (Fine, 1991). Students feel pushed out of school because of actions or barriers put up by their school. The student may end up feeling like they donââ¬â¢t belong in school, or do not fit in, or they are not smart enough to be in school. This then pushes them towards the streets and into bad behavior that leads them to becoming a juvenile delinquent. According to Brownstein, the zero tolerance is a failed approach. This policy is used to mandate predetermined consequences for rule infractions, regardless of the circumstances; itââ¬â¢s initially aimed at making schools safe. The best way to prevent serious violence at school, the theory went, was to ban any and all weapons of threats of violence, and accept no excuses. Browstein, 2010). Zero tolerance policies may be contributing to teen violence. Suspensions and expulsions in public schools have increased dramatically. Between 1974 and 2006, the rate at which U. S. students were suspended and expelled from school nearly doubled from 3. 7% of students in 1974 to &. 1% of students in 2006. It is estimated that over 100,000 students were expelled and 3,300, 000 students were suspended at least once in the 2005-2006 school year which is an 8% increase in suspensions and a 15% increase in expulsions since the 2001-2001 school year. Brownstein, 2010) Today schools are getting carried away with the ââ¬Å"zero toleranceâ⬠policy somewhat. Instead of helping to resolve a simple conflict in which they would call home for, they are now calling law enforcement. Too many school incidents that can be handled by the school are now being taken care of by the police and courts. ( Brownstein, 2010) An example given in the article talked about how a Columbus, GA teen student was expelled for violating school rules by talking to his mother whom he had not spoken to in thirty days, on his cell phone while at school. His mother was on deployment as a soldier in Iraq. It is common sense that the choice of disciplinary action was extremely harsh. There is no way to justify expelling this student given the circumstances of the phone call. Therefore, this example surely helps you to see exactly how this ââ¬Å"zero toleranceâ⬠policy is indeed failing our children. Trying to get you to understand that yet the policy is put in place to protect the school faculty and other students from violent behavior from certain students, it is also being used in incidents that do not need to be presented to law enforcement. Expulsion and suspension disciplinary action is not making our schools safer or more academically sound. In fact, schools with high rate expulsion and suspensions usually have less satisfactory school ratings according to the American Psychological Association. This suggests to me that it also contributes to children becoming juvenile delinquents due to harsh punishment and the things that they are currently dealing with in their personal lives. I will point out how African American students are suspended at nearly three times the rate and expelled at 3. times the rate of white students, according to the U. S. Department of Educationââ¬â¢s Office of Civil Rights. Latino students are 1. 5 times as likely to be suspended when compared to white peers. It seems that the white students get referred to the office at a higher rate than students of color for offenses such as smoking, vandalism, leaving without permission, and obscene language. African-American and Latino students are referred for discipline at a higher rate than their white peers for disrespect, excessive noise, and loitering. Brownstein, 2010) These behaviors you would think would seem to rely on subjective judgment on the part of educators. Maybe this is part of the reason why most students of color are failing in school and become juvenile delinquents somewhere along the line. They are hardly allowed the chance to stay in class if they are consistently disciplined harshly over fairly minor infractions that can be handled by the parents and teacher alone. Educators need to take the time out to think about what they are disciplining a student for, and how they are disciplining them and the consequences that lie ahead if you are too harsh. It is the same way when it comes to a parent raising children. You must know when you are being too excessive when it comes to punishment. Conclusion Promote the students positive behavior more and maybe the outcome will be different. Behavior begins at home. Parents come first when it comes to making sure your child/children act accordingly in public. It is a group effort also if you are taking on the responsibility of teaching someoneââ¬â¢s child. You canââ¬â¢t just give up on the child, or take the easiest route such as harsh discipline. There has to be a system put in place in the home and in the schools to turn around bad behavior to avoid our children being introduced to the jail system turning them into juvenile delinquents. There also must be a system put in place in the home and school to look at certain incidents that happen in school not all in the same light. How we raise our children will be the result you get out of the situation. Strive to raise them the right way, and educators should stop relying on law enforcement to handle what can be handled between themselves, the student and the parents.

In order to improve this relationship, some organizations encourage team building by dedicating a few days for members to socialize. In most organizations, this relationship is usually strictly professional.The only time the two interact is while it involves work. There is no better motivation to improve their job productivity than this. In others, employees are hardworking. Their attitude towards work is usually a positive one (Jackson, 2002).Work environment A positive work environment improves on employee attitude. This depends on other employees, the management and the available resources. If an organization takes care of their employees by providing all needed resources, then their productivity will improve. Some may argue that it is up to the employee to ensure that they attain job satisfaction from their work, as they are the only ones in control of their attitude and performance. It is also possible to say that all the responsibility is entirely the managements. Another issue that marks anime is that it is an escape from reality. Past the obvious supernatural powers, there are several issues that are indicative of Japanese society. An example of this is the Japanese fascination with powerful women in anime; the female characters are not the submissive women of Japanese society, but they are still regarded as inferior to men. Consequently, Japanese animation, as a form of popular culture, can be used as an analysis of the role of women in Japanese society. Through looking at how women are portrayed in a broad sweep of Japanese animation over the last ten years or so, we can begin to identify the role of women in contemporary Japanese society. And too many men are expected to sacrifice themselves to their jobs, to the point of having no family involvement. When a man retires, he sometimes becomes trapped in a family he doesnââ¬â¢t know, with nothing to do, and he tends to die soon after from his sudden lack of purpose. Historically, like almost every culture on the planet, Japan has tended toward idealizing male dominance and female submissiveness. However, women have not been invisible, especially in Japanââ¬â¢s early years. Some of Japanââ¬â¢s greatest literary figures were women, such as the novelist Lady Murasaki, who lived about a thousand years ago. However, when Japan became war-oriented and feudal, women quickly became second-class citizens. Most women were treated as they have been treated throughout history: as merchandise, or servants, and as heir-producing machines. The concentration of the following analysis is on mainstream youth-oriented works, not as much on the adult-male oriented manga. Even with the youth-oriented works, one should remember a few key points. First, many manga are targeted at either girls or boys, and can be classified as either girlsââ¬â¢ or boysââ¬â¢ comics. (see glossary) Generally, though not always, boysââ¬â¢ comics are told from a male perspective, and vice versa. Also, girlsââ¬â¢ comics tend to focus on human relationships more than the boysââ¬â¢ comics; the latter focus more on competition or contests of will (such as a detective struggling to close a case). Lastly, girlsââ¬â¢ comics tend to have artwork that is dreamier and softer, while boysââ¬â¢ comics tend to be brasher and flashier. Also, Japanese manga for young people tend to be far more intricate, human, philosophical, and mature than American comics. Responsibility and the consequences of oneââ¬â¢s actions are taught at all levels; so is the essentially humanity of even oneââ¬â¢s enemies (usually). Conversely, the increased maturity level also means that nudity and sexual themes are present in comics meant for grade scholars. The theme of ââ¬Å"men ought to be stronger than womenâ⬠is a pervading theme that can sum up a lot of gender relations in manga and anime. Bent on achieving the goals of modernization and Westernization, the Japanese, in rejecting their own history and traditions, have sought to become Nihonjin-banare (de-Japanized) ââ¬â a generally complimentary term, implying that one looks and acts more like a Westerner or a Caucasian than the average Japanese. ââ¬Å"Japaneseness-freeâ⬠might convey the nuance of the term even better. Take a look at the animated characters featured in anime. Physically they are ââ¬Å"de-Japanized Japaneseâ⬠ââ¬â a blend of Japanese and Caucasian characteristics. Given the setting of Princess Mononoke, it is obvious that the characters are intended to be pure Japanese (or at least Mongoloid), yet their features are nearly identical to the presumably Caucasian characters in Miyazakiââ¬â¢s earlier work, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, a fantasy set in a future world suggestive of medieval Europe. (The heroine herself is named after the daughter of King Alcinous of Homerââ¬â¢s The Odyssey). In Miyazakiââ¬â¢s animation there is no physical distinction between Japanese and Caucasians. Evangelion features a Japanese girl, Rei, and Asuka, a girl who is one-quarter German and three-quarters Japanese. Apart from Asukaââ¬â¢s Caucasian attributes of light brown hair and blue eyes, there are no significant differences in the facial features or physical development of the two girls. One should also note that Rei has blue hair and red eyes rather remarkable traits for a Japanese girl!

Life, its problems, the good and the bad of human experience, are major concerns of Simon Armitage’s poetry
There are three poems I have chosen to help me discuss and write about my thesis ââ¬ËLife , its problems, the good and the bad of human experience, are major concerns of Simon Armitage's poetry'. They are the Untitled poem ââ¬Å"I am very botheredâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Poemâ⬠and ââ¬Å"It Ain't What You Do, It's What It Does To Youâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Poemâ⬠is one of Armitage's life problem poems When You don't remember the good things a person has done but the bad things a person has done you remember. This poem has many lines which start with ââ¬Ëand' which is a sort of list of things this person has done. Also he starts off the poem with ââ¬Å"And if it snowed and snow covered the driveâ⬠which is like the poem is the second part of another poem or he has left out the beginning and got to the important part. There are three verses describing things he did. Mostly everything is good things about him for example ââ¬Å"And for his mum he hired a private nurseâ⬠apart from the last sentence which describes him doing bad things for example ââ¬Å"And twice he lifted 10 quid from her purseâ⬠(Mother). This made the reader only remember the bad things because it was the last thing the reader remembers about him from the whole paragraph. The last verse is about how people rated him as a bad person who he was only occasionally like everyone else in the world. There was one sarcastic part of the poem when he said ââ¬Å"every week he tipped his wageâ⬠and soon after said ââ¬Å"what he didn't spend he savedâ⬠because he would not have nothing to save if he spent half on alcohol. I think Armitage's poems puts in these sarcastic bits and bad or wrong doings spread over the poem so you are al ways reminded he is a bad person but he is clearly an average person but people judge you on all the things you do so you should be careful on what you do. ââ¬Å"I am very botheredâ⬠is a poem of the bad of human experiences. It's about what you do to try to attract attention which has good and bad consequences. Simon Armitage shows how he feels about his experiences when he looks back on them. He feels very troubled when he remembers a time when he was in school as a child in a science lab. He put a pair of plastic handled scissors over a hot Bunsen burner until it was soft and melting slowly and gave it to a female pupil. When she held it around her fingers he described the scene as ââ¬Å"O the unrivalled stench of branded skin as you â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ meaning it was so bad no other bad smell could compete with it and that it left a mark of dull, dark, black, burnt skin. There was a burnt ring around one of her fingers and one of her thumbs that were marked for life. He described his feelings of this horrific atrocity by saying ââ¬Å"Don't believe me if I say that was just my butterfingered way at thirteen, of asking you if you would marry meâ⬠butterfingered way meaning not really meaning it, not seriously so he means don't believe be if I said I was only joking when I said will you marry me. Finally, the poem ââ¬Å"It Ain't What You Do It's What It does To Youâ⬠is about human experiences which are mainly good. It starts off with him not have gone to America with hardly anything but then say he has lived with thieves in Manchester which are both bas experiences in the first verse. In the second verse he talks about only one thing he hasn't done which is gone to the quiet, peaceful Taj Mahal ââ¬Å"padded through Tag Mahal, barefootâ⬠. In the third verse he talks about only one thing he has done. Which is skimmed a flat stones across Black moss on a day so still he could hear every sound which is normally unheard of ââ¬Å"hear each set of ripplesâ⬠. In the fourth verse he starts off with him not have sky dived from an aircraft but he says ââ¬Å"I held the wobbly head of a boy at a day centre, and stroked his fat handsâ⬠which has a really big effect on your life to see someone in a bad state. All these examples shown of things done or things he hasn 't done means he is saying our experiences effect our behaviour and ways of thinking and makes us more wiser on the things we do. Like In the final verse he describes the feelings of doing all those things inside of us as a ââ¬Å"sense of something elseâ⬠which I believe it's a feeling so out of this world that you have to do it to find out. All these poems we have studied show that Simon Armitage thinks deeply about humans and how they react to life experiences. Whether life experiences bring problems or happiness we all have to deal with them in the right way. For example from the poem ââ¬ËPoem' the problem of the man only remembered by the bad points and that man has to deal with that in the right way by defending himself and the people who rate him also have to be careful on what they say about people. We have to try and live through it all without it bringing us down and making us feel miserable. For example ââ¬ËThe untitled poem about him very bothered about the girls burnt fingers we have to deal with the fact that it happened and to let it go and get on with our lives. We also have to make sure we don't make wrong decisions just to make ourselves feel happy and don't care about the others. For example again to the untitled poem Simon should of thought of the consequences and the pain of others but he didn't he was only seeking attention for himself. Now I hope you now know Simon Armitage poems are based on life's good and bad experiences.
