It is important for totalitarian states to have a charismatic leader. This makes it easier for the party he stands for to gain power. The Nazis came as close as possible to becoming a totalitarian state in Germany. They operated under a policy of gleichschaltung which was controlling every aspect of the entire German populous. The totalitarian state of Germany was successful to the extent that they deterred any opposition from gaining momentum and promoted official ideology. They gained full control of political, social/economic and cultural power over their people. There were only a few minor factors that would stop it being completely totalitarian. One of these factors being that due to Germany not being self-sufficient it couldnââ¬â¢t function without the help of other countries who provided Germany resources. Another factor was that only a majority of the German populations approved of Hitler as their leader. In order for Germany to be considered a completely successful totalitarian state they must force all people to support them. The Nazi party failed to do this. Political Germany was dominated by one political party, the Nazi party. They established power with only 44% percent of the nationââ¬â¢s vote. The commitment to make decisions centralised and loyal to one leader (Hitler) strengthened the Nazis grip on a totalitarianism society. Hitler was focused on power gradually through 1933 and 1934. He did this in part by ordering Goeringââ¬â ¢s SS and SA to launch assaults on any anti-Nazi parties. In February 1933 Communists were wrongly accused of starting a fire at the Reichstag that was seen as a signal for communist insurrection. Leading up to the elections in March 1933, thousands of communist officials were arrested under Hitlerââ¬â¢s orders, In addition to this all communist and socialist newspapers were banned. Following the elections finishing Hitler transferred all the power that the Reichstag had to himself. He did this by excluding and arresting all communist deputies and made arrangements with the other parties. This then gave him the power to effectively overturn the German/Weimar constitution. When the Reichstag met, the communists did not dare attend. All 81 of the communist members of the Reichstag were expelled. All other MPââ¬â¢s were intimidated into giving Hitler the supreme powers to make and suspend laws. All major positions of power were now Nazi party members. The unions were replaced by the German labour front and opponents were imprisoned. Every single political party was abolished except for the Nazis. Germany had become a one party state. In a plebiscite held in November 1933 the results showed that 96. 3% of the population supported Hitler. It was in 1934 that Hitler began to turn on rivals within his party. The SA, led by Rohm, was considered too radical, ill-disciplined and working class by Hitler. Within the SA there were 3million members who believed Hitler owed them a debt for helping him in gaining power. They wanted a socialist programme to be implemented. It was believed by Hitler that if he did this, he would lose the support of the industrialists. The German army resented the SA and wanted them disbanded. Hitler made a deal with the army. This deal was that the army would support him if he eventually disbanded from the SA and began a policy of rearmament. On the 30th of June 1934 Rohm was found murdered along with 400 other ââ¬Å"brown shirt leaders. This night is referred to as the night of long knives. The army along with the SS were now loyal to Hitler. On August 2nd 1934 Hindenburg died. This then gave Hitler the opportunity, which he took, to declare himself Fuhrer. The role of the Fuhrer was President, Chancellor and Commander in Chief all in one. All soldiers took an oath of allegiance to him personally. A plebiscite approved of this with 88. 93% of the vote. Th e Weimar Republic was over and the Third Reich about to begin. All media was controlled by the Nazis. Newspapers, radio stations, films obeyed and said what the Nazis told them to. A number of rallies were put on to emphasise just how strong Nazi Germany was. Goebbels was in charge of this and was also very successful. He was able to persuade people into believing that Hitler and the Nazis were right. All Nazi view points on everything were always emphasized. Groups opposing the Nazis such as socialist, communists, liberals, democrats, Jews and other group were targeted by the Nazis. All books were censored, over 2500 authors banned and many books burnt on the streets. Propaganda manipulated Hitlerââ¬â¢s image very carefully so that he would be portrayed as a kind, hardworking man with simple tasks. The SS and Gestapo (secret police) acting under the orders of Himmler, made terror a regular occurrence and a matter of state policy. Any sort of opponents were beaten and regularly thrown into concentration camps. The power of the German police was considerable. The Gestapo were given unlimited powers. Any judges that did not support Nazi views were removed. There was an atmosphere of fear in Germany. The public were encouraged to report to police about their neighbours if they showed any signs of suspicious behaviour. German begun to turn into a law abiding country. Social/economic ââ¬â one factor that contributed to Nazi totalitarianism was convincing the nation that the society that they had been living in was immoral, beyond reform and corrupt. It gave the impression of an alternative society where all these current wrongs would be addressed. The Nazis came into power as the working and middle classes had suffered through enormous economic hardships that had been brought on by the Great Depression that occurred in the late 1920ââ¬â¢s and early 1930ââ¬â¢s. This meant that they had a large following and popular support from all middle classes that were seeking to maintain the political and economic status quo. Nazi Totalitarian Ideology demanded total conformity by the people. Propaganda (controlled by Goebbels) supported this. Information was organised through control of radio and press. Cinemas and papers had to show pictures glorifying the Nazi movement. Education/schools were also used as a means of communication and control. Boyââ¬â¢s 10-18years old were sent to Hitler Youth, Girls 10-18 years old were sent to Hitler Maidens. School textbooks were re- written along Nazi lines. University professors were required to wear Swastikas amp; take an oath of allegiance to Hitler. Resources were monopolised by the state to try and control all aspects of public amp; private life. Labour Unions were abolished by decree on July 14 1933 and the Labour Front was set up. Employees were now forbidden to strike. The National Labour Law of Jan 20, 1934 allowed the state to exert direct control over all businesses employing more than 20 persons. Thus all employees amp; employers were under the direct control of the Nazi Government. Unemployment dropped from 6m in 1932 to 1m in 1936 due to conscription, large infrastructure projects and Jews and married women being forced out of jobs thus creating vacancies. A key economic factor which prevented the Nazi party from establishing complete totalitarian state was the fact that Germany was not fully self-sufficient. It continued to rely on other countries supplying it with important raw materials to assist Germanys industry. It was later considered a fact in Germanyââ¬â¢s aggression towards opposing countries in the lead up to World War II. Cultural Germanyââ¬â¢s culture was encouraged but only with certain elements. Any book that was considered to be unsuitable for the German public was burnt. The Nazis believed that the German Aryans were the superior race. The Aryan race had blue eyes and blonde hair. They especially hated Negroes and Jewish people. In September 1935 the Nuremburg Laws were passed which deprived Jews of German citizenship and forbade them from marrying Aryans. Children were taught during school to dislike these races. Conditions gradually got worse amp; worse for Jews (e. g. property confiscated, liberty deprived, safety endangered). Attacks on not only them but their property were always encouraged, such as the crystal night in 1938 where as many as 91 Jews were murdered during the brutal attacks. A further 30,000 were arrested and imprisoned into concentration camps around Germany. These attacks left the streets of Germany covered with broken glass from the windows of the Jewish owned buildings, synagogues and stores. Thousands of people left Germany and those that stayed were exposed to the final solution. The Nazi party were atheists but they still needed to come to terms with the churches of Germany. A concordat with the Pope (1933) gave the Catholics the freedom of worship, although the Nazis still interfered with Church teachings. The Protestants were subjected to close state control. Hitler appointed Pastor Ludwig Muller, a protestant, the Evangelical Bishop of the German Reich. Muller them amended all Christian teachings so that they could be in line with the Nazi ideals. If any Protestants openly protested or did not follow were sent to concentrations camps. Numerous brave leaders such as Bonheoffer and Meimaller spoke out against the Nazis. Due to these actions they were imprisoned and executed. The Nazi party also persecuted the undesirables. Anybody who they thought threatened the purity of the Aryan race whether it is gypsies, mentally ill or homosexuals. In 1939 a programme of euthanasia was introduced. Over 5000 children were killed and 71, 000 adults all under this programme. The majority of the German population approved of Hitler. This is a reason as to why Nazi Germany did not fully succeed in becoming a totalitarian state. If you are not ready for it and donââ¬â¢t have a strategy in place for handling the volume, dealing with your reading can often feel like trying to drink from a fire hose. But fear not: handling college reading is not rocket science. It simply reà quires an effective strategy and a commitment from you to follow through on it. If youââ¬â¢ve followed our advice so far, you will, on Sunday of every week, sketch out your schedule and your assignments for the week. This will help you determine where the big reading assignments for the week fall and how to break them up or otherwise plan to handle them effectively. Proper planning alone, though, is not enough to ensure effectiveness. First, we hope youââ¬â¢ve settled in to your ââ¬Å"study placeâ⬠where you have good light, a comfortable chair, and enough quiet and isolation to minimize distractions. The importance of this should be self-evident, as you are looking to get imà mersed in what you are reading. People stopping by every five minutes to visit, or other distractions will obviously break your concentration, slow you down, and reduce the effectiveness of your session. Once youââ¬â¢ve settled in to start a reading assignment, though, there is more to handling it effectively than just plunging in and plowing through it. If you havenââ¬â¢t already done so, take a look at the course syllabus as a whole and then at the section containing the reading assignment you are about to begin. Pay special atà tention to any titles, headings, or other descriptors that your professor has indicated on that section of the syllabus. Consider how your assignment for tonight fits in with what youââ¬â¢ve been doing and with where you are going in the next several lectures. What you are looking for here is a context for your reading, so that youââ¬â¢ll know specifically what to be thinking about as you read. Once youââ¬â¢ve done that, take a few minutes to flip through the section of the textà book or course packet containing your reading assignment for the night, and get a sense of how it is organized. Scan the chapter titles and section headings to give yourself a framework for organizing the material as you read. Doing this will help you read actively, think critically about what you are reading, and better retain the subject matter. Once youââ¬â¢ve done this, go ahead and plunge in. Highlight, underline, or make margin notes in the textbook next to key points. Write any questions triggered by your reading in the margins as well, so youââ¬â¢ll remember to ask the professor about these points during or after lecture. If as you read you come across any words, terms, or concepts you do not understand, look them up in the glossary (if there is one), a dictionary, or another secondary source, and write the definitions or explanations right into the textbook so that theyââ¬â¢ll be there if you need them again. Donââ¬â¢t simply read past themââ¬âdoing so may significantly impede your understanding of the topic. Finally, force yourself to read actively. Donââ¬â¢t simply paint the text with a highlighter, thinking that youââ¬â¢ll come back to tease out the important ideas later. Think critically about what you are reading: force yourself to actively relate the subject matter you are covering to the most recent section heading or chapter title and then to the section on the course syllabus you reviewed before you began. If you find your mind wandering or if you find yourself just blindly reading words without thinking about them, stop. Dont Miss Classes If you attend the average college or university in this country and take the average course load, you are paying somewhere around $65 per lecture for your college education. If youre attending a top private university, the number is closer to $85 per lecture. Do you routinely go out in the street throwing away fistfuls of twenties? Because thats exactly what youre doing if you skip your class lectures. I dont care what anyone else tells you. You are always and I mean always better off going to your classes than you are skipping them. It doesnt matter how hung over you are or how dreadfully bad a lecturer your professor is. It doesnt matter that you havent started or finished the reading for the class, and it doesnt matter that you might be embarrassed by the professor if you get called on to participate and cannot. It doesnt matter that the class is small and you wont be able to hide the fact that you are unprepared. You must not skip classes unless you are really sick. There are so many good reasons for this, well have trouble covering them all in this section. But well try. The corollary to this rule is that you must also show up for class on time and not leave class early and the reasons for the corollary are the same as the ones for the general rule. Put It All Together The last trick about preparedness is finding the time to put everything together before the pressure of an exam strikes. Once youve completed a section of the syllabus, using your lecture notes as the guide, go back and backfill into your class notes relevant details from the readings, including any margin notes, underlines, or highlightsand if applicable, any particularly vexing problems highlighting difficult concepts from your problem sets. What youre looking to do is pull the readings and the lecture notes together into a single, cohesive outline. Once youve completed this consolidation, studying for tests, midterms, and finals is as simple as mastering this outline. A Word About Study Groups Although everyone masters material in different ways, it was our collective experience that college study groups frequently devolved into inefficient social or gossip sessions, rather than effective study sessions. As you have seen, our approach has been to make room for study and room for a rich and vibrant life in college. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule but to us, effective study in college is best done either in isolation or with a single study partner.

Descartes was a "jack of all trades", making major contributions to the areas of anatomy, cognitive science, optics, mathematics and philosophy. Underlying his methodology is the belief that all science is based on mathematics. This is manifested in his unification of ancient geometry and his new alegbra based on the Cartesian coodinate system. For Descartes, certainty in philosphy and in mathematics is gained through understanding. We may know that two apples and two apples makes four apples, but Descartes believes that matematics transcends the senses, contributing to an overall mathematical order to the universe that is independent of senses. Senses were at the center of his Meditations on First Philosphy, a work in which Descartes explores the concepts of self, God and mind. He begins by shaking our belief in the sneses; if they are all an illusion created by a malicious deceiver, what can we trust? His answer is that we can doubt, and that the deceiver cannot cause us to doubt our own existence. Thus, the famous "cogito ergo sum" (I think therefore I am). However, the I is not a physical "i", is is an immaterial mind that is identified by "I". Thus begins Cartesian Dualism, the theory that there are two fundamental types of entities : mind and matter. The physical bodies exists extended in space, with depth, width and breadth. However, minds are entirely immaterial and nonspatial; they are the "I" he refers to. Since the mind is the only entity that can think (rocks cannot), Descartes uses the cogito arguemnt to prove the existence of a mind.

For these questions there is no specific answer because each and every country has their own ways of considering someone as an adult or not. I think it would be easy to define adult than a child. And this would help us understand the child which is just the opposite of being adult. Adult is the age that someone can legally vote, marry or sometimes can buy alcohols, be charged with crime as the adult age. However, this can vary from country to country. For instance child labor in Syria, Bangladesh or Paraguay is minimum 12 whereas most other countries set 14 to 16 years old. And In USA the figure is completely different. A person to legally work should be minimum 18 years old and 15-17 can only work if they have permission from their guardians only. Marriage is one of the major things that separate adults from children. A married person is usually considered as an adult. Because he/she is going to become a guardian of their children and they should be able to take care of their families. In many countries the age of marriage varies. For instance, in many African countries, such as Mali, Niger and Mozambique, over 50% of girls are married before they turn 18. In Yemen, 64% of girls are married before 18, and in Bangladesh, 81% of girls marry before 18. (Nour, 2006) Another interesting issue that most people consider themselves as an adult is the age to vote and decide who should lead or being able to run for election. In most countries around the world the legal age to vote is 18 however in some countries like Australia and Germany the legal age to vote can be only 16.This shows that a 16 years old in Germany is considered as an adult while in Italy the minimum age to vote to elect a senator is 25 and in Liechtenstein, a person to vote should be 30 years old or above. Also, in different religions scripture there are differences on who is a child or who should be considered as an adult. In Jews, a 13 years old kid is considered as an adult and is able to attended ceremonies and parties. On the other hand in most of the time Islam considers someone who is above 15 as an adult. In short, there is no specific exact age of considering someone a child. However, in each country they have some part of the society that are considered as a child .So with respect to each country there are some right given to the child prior to the age of adolescence. Historical background of the rights of childrens law So far there is no specific point where we can say the history of children rights started, however for the past 50 years and so the rights of the children are becoming clearer and separated from the other general human rights. Universal Declaration of Human rights is considered as the basis for all the international legal children rights. The 1923 declaration of rights of children drafted by Englantyne Jeeb and Dorothy Buxton in London, England in 1919 is appreciated by league of Nation and adopted by the united nation in 1946, and then considered as the Convention on the rights of the Child. The first legally binding international body that incorporates with civil, cultural, political, social and economical rights is the Convention on the rights of the Child monitored by the Committee on the rights of the child. It is human right treaty with 190 ratifications. Only the two countries which didnt sign for this treaty are the United States and Somalia. Somali didnt sign because of the internal problems its currently facing and United Sates didnt sign because of some contradicting rules like childrens rights to inheritance in same-sex marriages and particular rights for youth. The CRC have four major principles. This principles are the principle of non discrimination, the best interests of the child, the right to life, survival and development, Considering the views of the child in decisions which affect them (according to their age and maturity). Childrens rights law is defined as the point where the law intersects with a childs life. That includes juvenile delinquency, due process for children involved in the criminal justice system, appropriate representation, and effective rehabilitative services; care and protection for children in state care; ensuring education for all children regardless of their origin, race, gender, disabilities, or abilities, and; health care and advocacy. (Ahearn, 2007) Children rights can be categorized in to three major categories as Provision, Protection and Participation. Or depending on the child right information network (CNN) we can categorize children rights in to two major categories as Economic, social and cultural rights and the second as Environmental, cultural and developmental rights (Freeman, 2000) Provision is the right to live a standard living, get a proper health care, education and be able to enjoy a child life. This includes being able to have a playing place and recreation places. This helps the child to grow healthy, confident and happy in his life. They will learn how to treat people well, how to care for people and help their society in the future. Protection: Children have the right to be protected from abuse, exploitation, discrimination and neglect. This includes offering the child a safe place to sleep, live and play. The last category is Participation. A child should be offered a place in the society. They should be able to participate in community programs, youth voice activities and decision makings.

The theme of this essay outlines two things. One, the key elements of Bretton woods system and second, the characterisation of Bretton woods system by Ruggie as ââ¬Ëembedded liberalismââ¬â¢, and how far he succeeds in it. The Bretton woods system is widely referred to the international monetary regime, which prevailed from the end of the World War 2 until the early 1970s. After the end of the World War 2, the need of international monetary framework to boost trade and economic; growth and stability, was important. Taking its name from the site of the 1944 conference, attended by all forty-four allied nations; the Bretton Woods system consisted of four key elements. First, to make a system in which each member nation has to fix or peg his currency exchange rate against the gold or U.S. dollar, as the key currency. Secondly, the free exchange of currencies between countries at the established and fixed exchange rate; plus or minus a one-percent margin. Thirdly, to create an institutional forum, so-called International Monetary Fund (IMF), for the international co-operation on money matters: to set up, stabilize, and watch over exchange rates. Fourth, to remove all the existing exchange controls limiting (protectionism) policies by the members, on the use of its currency for international trade. In practice the first scheme, as well as its later development and final demise, were directly dependent on the preferences and policies of its most powerful member, the United States. According to John Gerard Ruggie, 1982, this Bretton woods system of monetary co-operation represented the type of liberalism which characterise ââ¬Å"domestic social economic stability along with a liberal trading order.â⬠He referred this system as ââ¬Ëembed... ...aracterised Bretton woods system as ââ¬Ëembedded liberalismââ¬â¢ to show how market forces were surrounded by social and political constraints. Embedded liberalism thus signifies a compromise between the excessive free international market economics and the excessive domestic protectionist policies. Ruggie embedded liberalism represented an enclosed international liberal trade within the post-war consensus of fixed exchange rates and capital controls. The fixed exchange rate helped to promote stable liberal trade by removing any future uncertainty in exchange rate movements. Whereas for domestic social and economic stability, national government would use capital controls. All these practices were the key elements of Bretton woods system and also constitute the institution of embedded liberalism. No there wasn't a word in the books about searching for your ropes and instruments in the shadows; about trying to keep clean in a half bucket of tepid water; about the cobbles digging into your chest. Nor about the slow numbing of the arms, the creeping paralysis of the muscles as the fingers tried to work against the cows powerful explosive efforts. He clearly doesn't show any signs of enjoying his job, yet. Later on, on his way to Mr. Farnon, he remembers some of the horror stories told to him from experienced veterans, which had visited his college. One vet said, Never a night off or a half a day. He made me wash the car, dig the garden, mow the lawn, do the family shopping. But when he told me to sweep the chimney I left. And another remembers, First job I had to do was pass the stomach tube on a horse. Got it into the trachea instead of the esophagus. Couple of quick pumps and down went the horse with a hell of a crash-dead as a hammer. That's when I started these gray hairs. By that time James was doubting whether or not being a vet was the best profession he could have chosen. Deciding to stay a vet in the same city he quickly realized the problem of having to adapt to his new environment. One of the first he encountered was the ability to communicate properly with his customers. James, on the first day of work, while Mr. Farnon was out, had to deal with a customer on his own. Harriot had trouble understanding him due to the use of terms, to describe animal body parts, sickness, and diseases, which were made-up by farmers in that area. After the customer left (Harriot) returned thoughtfully to the sitting-room. It was disconcerting but I had listened to my first case history without understanding a word of it. There are many unexpected obstacles and difficulties which are going to come in his life time job as a vet. One of which he hates dearly is the fact that his job requires him to be able to be wide-awake and focused at any time, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. He got a call one night at 3:15A.M. to come help a farmer with his mane having trouble giving birth. He remembers, My stomach contracted to a tight ball. While Maggie s the same like her mom that takes pride in her cultural heritage she thinks she would actually enjoy and have a special meaning to it rather than to just have laying around somewhere. Everyday Use distinguishes differences in how a family of three, Mama, Magi, and Dee using indirect direct characterization, perceive breaking change tradition. The indirect characterization of Mama leads the reader to see how she views heritage and doesnt want change. The indirect characterization is shown through a characters actions by what they say or do. In this case, Mama thinks Dee as a child is trying to brain wash her to make her believe a to of knowledge she didnt necessarily need to know. (94) Mama is afraid of change and is so stuck in the past to accept that tradition can break with this new era she is now living in. Although she didnt have education herself she isnt as aware of the changes happening now that her daughter went through when she went to school. If it isnt her way she feels like she isnt satisfied and maybe thinks she has failed as a parent due to Dee believing in other beliefs towards heritage. The direct characterization of Maggie provides the reader to see that she as well views heritage a different way and doesnt want change because shes allowing the foot steps of someone else. Direct characterization states how the actual character is with the narrator describing her, Mama, she explains how Maggie will be feel nervous until her sister leaves because she will feel ashamed and have a mixture of envy and awe. (93) Mama states Maggie this way because she is the exact same way mama is. Not because Maggie wants too but because Mama makes her this way by not letting her explore new things and not breaking traditions. Maggie was painted a picture from her mother of how she should see certain beliefs and other heritage things so she feels obligated to obey them. Since Mama is always blabbering on how Dee is different and how she got a new life, Maggie gets a sense of insecurity because she might think Well if I go against my mother maybe she as well may think I m going against her. She wants to not follow traditions and go on in the world like Dee but shes too scared as well. Also as for Dee indirect characterization shows the reader that she isnt afraid of change and sees heritage different from the others. Throughout the story the Mama makes Dee the golden child but beneath that all Dee wanted was change. Dee coming back home shes not the same Dee she was in her hill hood. Wanders, Deeds new former name after being married, said to Mama the old me is dead l couldnt bear it any longer, being named after the people who oppress me. (96) Mama sees the whole new change as a sign of Dee thinks shes better than her because she married a wealthy guy and doesnt like her old name. Although its the other way around she still is very prideful in where she comes from but is just not in the same mentality her mother still is in. Dee wanted to step out of this box her mother might of had her as AC child and explore new things now that equality is taking place during his time. She is in a whole new vibe trying to become someone in society and not be judged. Indirect and direct characterization help demonstrate the central theme by making a reader understand what the purpose of the character is. In Everyday Use three main characters were focused more than the other to analyze how breaking traditions can impact families beliefs about one another. Breaking away from heritage and traditions is perfectly fine. Imagine if the world was still in 1970 and not 2015, people would still have their mind in a closet and not as open as they do now.

Doctor Faustus Essay
Doctor Faustus, a talented German scholar who belittles the limits of human knowledge, believes that he has learned all that can be learned by conventional means. What is left for him, he thinks, but magic? He is offered a choice of Christian conscience by a good angel, and the path to damnation by an evil angel. Two fellow scholars, Valdes and Cornelius, teach him the fundamentals of black magic. Eventually, Faustus summons the devil Mephistopheles and the terms of their pact are agreed upon. In return for his immortal soul, Faustus will be granted twenty-four years of power, with Mephistopheles as his servant. In this play, the writer, Christopher Marlowe used symbolism through the play. Symbolism in general means the presentation of objects, moods and ideas through the medium of emblems or symbols. For example, When Faustus makes his pact with the devil, he signs it with his own blood. But as he goes to write, his blood thickens. That was a key moment in the play. Faustus wonders, ââ¬Å"What might the staying of my blood portend? / Is it unwilling I should write this bill?â⬠(2.1.62-63). He thinks since his blood is thickening and clotting it is some type of sign. At this point, Faustus believes his sticky blood is a symbol, a part of himself thatââ¬â¢s unwilling to give it all up for the devil and also that Lucifer insists on having the document written in blood. To him, this blood represents Faustusââ¬â¢s person. If he has the blood, he has Faustus. So itââ¬â¢s a symbol to Lucifer, too. Without the blood, thereââ¬â¢s nothing physical to represent Faustusââ¬â¢s soul. Then, at the end of the play, as he waits for death, Faustus cries out, ââ¬Å"One drop of blood will save me. O, my Christ!â⬠. Here, again, blood is a symbol of the whole personââ¬âChrist. Another example of symbolism that writer uses is when Faustus resolves to sell his soul to the devil in exchange for Mephistopheles, his decision to give it is not enough. Instead, Mephistopheles tells him, ââ¬Å"thou must bequeath it solemnly/And write a deed of gift with thine own blood;/Fo r the security craves Luciferâ⬠(2.1.333-35). This meant that Dr. Faustus has to sign over his soul in a written contact. Faustus does as Lucifer asks, which was writing a contract thatââ¬â¢s gives ownership of his soul to Lucifer in exchange for twenty-four years of having Mephistopheles around to boss. In legal terminology, this contact is called a ââ¬Å"deed of gift,â⬠It becomes the symbolà of Faustusââ¬â¢s decision to serve the devil; and since some definitions of sin state it as just that the decision to serve the devil instead of God, it also becomes a symbol of sin more generally. The contract is terrifying because it was actually real. It was made of paper and blood, and Faustus and Mephistopheles can see it and hold it in their hands. So while Faustusââ¬â¢s decision to serve the devil is not much more than an idea, this is an object that Lucifer can point to and say you belong to me. Faustusââ¬â¢s decision is put into document form to symbolize just how difficult, if not impossible, it will be Faustus to take back even if he really wants to. In conclusion, the writer, Christopher Marlowe used symbolism to his advantage which intensified the tragic appeal of this great drama.

The Philippines educational system is undergoing a big change which follows the international educational system. The K-12 system is the system used by the United States and other countries. The K-12 system is started by the Aquino Administration. The government will add two year plus Kindergarten. Many people think that implementing the program in the Philippines will be insignificant and unnecessary but others think that it would improve the countryââ¬â¢s educational system and the country as a whole. I agree with the K-12 system that will help students embrace a better quality education and will give them more job opportunities, especially abroad. There are many arguments regarding the K-12 implementation. I have chosen 3 arguments to talk about. First, parents are not financially stabled. Money would hinder the implementation of the system. The parents would pay two more years for the education of their children. Their children would learn more and gain more knowledge for those additional two year of education. Theà money that the parents pay will be put into good use for their childrenââ¬â¢s future. But the parents would be spending a lot more than they expected for good quality education. The parents are not prepared to pay for two more years of education. The plan of the administration was earlier than expected. And some parents are not happy with this plan because of financial problems. Second, improve the quality education we have in our country. The Philippines need good quality education because we have a poor education system. The K-12 system will help the country to have a higher standard of education the government can add more to the curriculum. The advancement of having an improved quality education would lead to an earlier success in a studentââ¬â¢s life. It may take him/ her long to finish high school but he/ she gained more knowledge than the studentââ¬â¢s who prepared in 10 years. The student would take longer to finish his/ her basic education but will be more prepared. It is enough that the student is prepared when reaching the age of 18 after finishing the K-12. Their minds will be mature enough to think better than what is expected of them if graduated at the age of 16. Lastly, prepare the student for work after graduating. Not all students who graduated will automatically be sent to a university for college. Some students prepare themselves to look for a job for the sake of having money to study in college while some are forced to work for the sake of helping the family. The students who have accomplished the 12 year system will automatically be recognized professionals because we are following the international education standard. This will be good for our country. But, the student has not accomplished his/ her schooling. He/ she needs to be sent off to college because completing all levels of education would mean a better job in or out of the country. A student can earn more if he/ she finishes college and finds a good job. Based on the arguments stated, either good or bad, the K-12 system has a good point. I agree that the parents will spend more money for good education but their money wonââ¬â¢t be put into waste. Their children will experience good quality education that will good for their future. Of courseà parents want whatââ¬â¢s best for their children in the quality of education because one day, their children will be the ones assisting them when they grow old. The old education system is done for 10 years and it can stress a studentââ¬â¢s life if the system should have been 12 years. We all know that some people have financial problems that they go to work after high school. 12 years is longer than the 10 year system but the graduate students of the K-12 will automatically be recognized professionals because we are following the international education standard. The K-12 system will help students get a better job abroad because of the quality education that follows the international education standard.

The novel, which follows the push-and-pull relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, deals with themes of love, pride, social expectations, and preconceived opinions. In the quotes that follow, well analyze how Austen conveys these themes with her trademark wry wit. Quotes About Pride I could easily forgive his pride, if he had not mortified mine. (Chapter 5) When Elizabeth speaks this quote, sheââ¬â¢s fresh off Darcyââ¬â¢s slight of her at the first ball, where she overheard him judging her not ââ¬Å"handsome enoughâ⬠for him to dance with. In context, where she and her family are discussing the ball with their neighbors, she tosses the line off in a good-natured, quipping sort of way. However, a closer read does suggest some element of truth to it: as the story progresses, it becomes evident that this unpleasant first meeting has colored Elizabethââ¬â¢s perception of Darcy, making her more susceptible to Wickhamââ¬â¢s lies. This quote is also the beginning of a running pattern through the novel: Elizabeth and Darcy are each able to acknowledge that they possess a shared flaw (Elizabeth acknowledges a degree of pride, Darcy admits that his prejudices are formed quickly and irrevocably). The theme of pride often connects to an inability to recognize oneââ¬â¢s own flaws, so although the characters still have a ways to go before theyââ¬â¢ll reach a happy conclusion, an admission of some flaws indicates that this will be a comedy where that conclusion is possible rather than a tragedy where a tragic flaw will be realized too little, too late. Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us. (Chapter 5) Mary Bennet, the middle Bennet sister, is neither frivolous like her younger sisters nor well-adjusted like her older sisters. Sheââ¬â¢s studious to a fault and is quite fond of philosophizing and moralizing, as she does here, where she inserts herself into a conversation about Mr. Darcyââ¬â¢s behavior at the ball by seizing on their mention of his ââ¬Å"prideâ⬠and jumping in with her philosophy. Itââ¬â¢s a clear indicator of her lack of social skills and her simultaneous desire to be included in society. Although itââ¬â¢s delivered in Maryââ¬â¢s moralizing, pretentious manner, this quote is not entirely untrue. Pride ââ¬â and vanity ââ¬â are central themes to the story, and Maryââ¬â¢s definitions give readers a way to distinguish the social snobbery of Miss Bingley or Lady Catherine and the inflated self-important of Mr. Collins from the pride of Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice explores personal pride as a stumbling block to true understanding and happiness, but it also presents the proudest character ââ¬â Darcy ââ¬â as one who does not care much what other people think of him, as evidenced by his cold social behavior. The contrast between care for perceptions and care for internal values is explored throughout the novel. ââ¬Å"But vanity, not love, has been my folly. Pleased with the preference of one, and offended by the neglect of the other, on the very beginning of our acquaintance, I have courted prepossession and ignorance, and driven reason away, where either were concerned. Till this moment I never knew myself.â⬠(Chapter 36) There is a term in classical Greek drama, anagnorisis, that refers to a characterââ¬â¢s sudden realization of something heretofore unknown or misunderstood. It often connects somehow to a shift in perception or relationship with an antagonist. The quote above, spoken by Elizabeth to herself, is Elizabethââ¬â¢s moment of anagnorisis, where she finally learns the truth about Darcy and Wickhamââ¬â¢s shared past via Darcyââ¬â¢s letter to her, and subsequently realizes her own flaws and mistakes. Elizabeths moment of self-awareness and character pivot indicates the literary skill at work here. Anagnorisis is something that appears in complex works with classical structures and multifaceted, flawed heroes; its presence is further proof that Pride and Prejudice is a skillful narrative, not simply a comedy of manners. In tragedies, this is the moment where a character comes to a much-needed realization, but learns their lesson too late to stop the tragic events already in motion. Because Austen is writing a comedy, not a tragedy, she allows Elizabeth to gain this needed revelation while thereââ¬â¢s still time to reverse course and achieve a happy ending. Quotes About Love ââ¬Å"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.â⬠(Chapter 1) This is one of the most famous opening lines in literature, up there with ââ¬Å"Call me Ishmaelâ⬠and ââ¬Å"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.â⬠Spoken by the omniscient narrator, the line essentially sums up one of the key premises of the novel; the rest of the story operates under the assumption that the reader and the characters alike share this knowledge. Although the themes of Pride and Prejudice are certainly not limited to marriage and money, those do loom large. It is this belief that leads Mrs. Bennet to push her daughters forward at every turn, both towards worthy candidates such as Mr. Bingley and unworthy ones such as Mr. Collins. Any single man with some fortune is a marriage candidate, plain and simple. There is a particular turn of phrase worth noting here as well: the phrase ââ¬Å"in want of.â⬠Although it sounds, at first glance, that itââ¬â¢s stating a rich, single man always wants a wife. While thatââ¬â¢s true, thereââ¬â¢s another interpretation. The phrase ââ¬Å"in want ofâ⬠is also used to indicate a state of lacking something. Thus, the other way to read it is that a rich, single man is lacking one crucial thing: a wife. This reading emphasizes the social expectations placed on both men and women, rather than one or the other. ââ¬Å"You are too generous to trifle with me. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes are unchanged; but one word from you will silence me on this subject for ever.â⬠à (Chapter 58) At the romantic climax of the novel, Mr. Darcy delivers this line to Elizabeth. It comes after all has been revealed between the two of them, all misunderstandings cleared up and both in full knowledge of what the other has said and done. After Elizabeth thanks Darcy for his assistance to Lydiaââ¬â¢s marriage, he confesses that he did it all for Elizabethââ¬â¢s sake and in hopes of proving his true nature to her. Because of her positive reception so far, he makes an attempt to propose to her again ââ¬â but this could not be more different than his first proposal. When Darcy first proposes to Elizabeth, itââ¬â¢s overlaid with a snobbish ââ¬â though not inaccurate ââ¬â appraisal of her social status relative to his. He uses language that ââ¬Å"seemsâ⬠romantic (insisting that his love is so great it overcame all rational obstacles), but comes across as incredibly insulting. Here, however, he not only approaches Elizabeth without pride and with genuine, unrehearsed language, but he also emphasizes his respect for her wishes. Rather than following the classic trope of ââ¬Å"pursue until you win her over,â⬠he calmly states that he will step away gracefully if thatââ¬â¢s what she wants. Itââ¬â¢s the ultimate expression of his unselfish love, as opposed to his previous self-centered arrogance and hyperawareness of social status. When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.â⬠(Chapter 11) This quote is spoken by Caroline Bingley, while she is passing time at Netherfield along with her brother, sister, brother-in-law, Mr. Darcy, and Elizabeth. The scene is, at least from her perspective, a subtle competition between her and Elizabeth for Darcyââ¬â¢s attention; she is, in fact, mistaken, as Elizabeth has no interest in Darcy at this time and is only at Netherfield to tend to her ill sister Jane. Miss Bingleyââ¬â¢s dialogue is a constant stream of attempts to get attention from Darcy. While sheââ¬â¢s rhapsodizing about the joys of reading, sheââ¬â¢s pretending to read a book that, as the sharp-tongued narrator informs us, she only chose because it was the second volume of the book Darcy had chosen to read. Often taken out of context, this quote is an excellent example of the gently satirical humor Austen often uses to poke fun at the social elite. The idea of taking pleasure in reading is not silly in and of itself, but Austen gives this line to a character who we know to be insincere, and compounds it by exaggerating the statement past any possibility of sincerity and making the speaker sound desperate and foolish. People themselves alter so much, that there is something new to be observed in them for ever. (Chapter 9) Elizabethââ¬â¢s dialogue is typically witty and laden with dual meanings, and this quote is a definite example. She delivers this line during a conversation with her mother, Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Bingley about the differences between country and city society. She remarks upon her delight in observing people ââ¬â which she intends as a barb at Mr. Darcy ââ¬â and doubles down with this quote when he suggests that provincial life must be quite boring for her observations. On a deeper level, this quote actually foreshadows the lesson Elizabeth learns over the course of the novel. She prides herself on her powers of observation, which creates her ââ¬Å"prejudicedâ⬠opinions, and she certainly does not believe that Mr. Darcy, of all people, will ever change. As it turns out, though, there is actually much more to be observed than she has at the point when she makes this sarcastic comment, and Elizabeth comes to understand that truth later on.
